Line by line, in every language
Each line of every story is heard back to back in every language you choose. Children pick up new words by hearing them right next to ones they already know.
interleaved bilingual storytelling
- 5-year-olds
Hearing a story with 31 line-by-line language switches taught new words just as effectively as hearing each language in a single block.

Storybooks that mix a dominant-language narrative with second-language target words support retention, with older preschoolers benefiting most.

Mixing two languages within one session outperforms studying each language in separate blocks.

Researchers call this approach interleaved bilingual storytelling, and have tested it directly with bilingual children. In a randomized study, 5-year-olds heard a story with 31 line-by-line language switches and learned new words just as well as children who heard each language in a single block (Brouillard et al., 2022) . Among 2- to 5-year-olds, storybooks that mix a dominant-language narrative with second-language target words also support retention, with older preschoolers benefiting most (Read et al., 2021) . In adult learners, mixing two languages within one session likewise outperforms studying them in separate blocks (Libersky et al., 2025) .
